HISTORY OF THE LONGMAN NUBIAN HERD
Part 1
by Betty Longman
It has been almost a lifelong association with Nubians
for Betty who lost her mother when she was four years old.
She was raised by her grandparents who had Nubians because
her grandfather had asthma and heart trouble. The Nubians
were selected because they had the richest and best flavored
milk, and were big and strong and beautiful.
As the years passed, and Betty married and had her family
(Sherry being the first to arrive), living in residential
areas did not leave a spot for the goats! Never forgetting
those loving Nubians, the decision was made to move to the
country so animals could again be part of their lives.
It was 1968 -- Sherry wanted to start a dairy goat FFA
Project -- you guessed it! Here came the Nubians, only this
time it was the beginning of a Registered Purebred herd!
In 1970 the foundation herd sire became a Permanent Champion
as a 2 yr. old, and the same year his first 3 yearling
milkers made their stars on a 1 day test.
That buck's name was GCH++B LONGMAN'S BARNABY
BUCK.
The first doe to enter the herd was HALLCIENDA CRYSTAL GIRL
who was a beautiful Champion!
The next additiion to the herd was from the Los Vientos
herd: STARS AND BARS TARA BELLE who was also a beautiful
Champion, and she was accompanied by several of her
herdmates which included 4 of her milking daughters and a
granddaughter.
All did extremely well at shows and all made their *M on
official test. BARNABY BUCK and these does were the
beginning of LONGMAN'S NUBIANS.
In 1973-1974 three more does and two bucks entering the herd
also proved to be highly influential in laying its
foundation. They were GCH JARL'S CANDY who was purchased as
a yearling milker and became a GCH at her first 3 shows as a
2 yr. old:
